You receive the gift of righteousness by grace. You get grace through faith. God gives you faith by leading, teaching, and correcting you.

And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. ~ Romans 5:16-17
What does this Scripture tell you? It shows you Grace and the gift of righteousness go together. Righteousness is doing what God says is right. These verses show the same pattern. You receive the gift of righteousness by grace. You get grace through faith. God gives you faith by leading, teaching, and correcting you. If you get grace and the gift of righteousness, you’ll reign in Life by Christ Jesus.
Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. ~ Romans 5:18-19
The free gift came upon you. You shall be made righteous. You aren’t doing the work. God gave you the free gift of righteousness. God does the work. God will make you righteous. Even now, Christ in you doesn’t sin. Your flesh does no righteousness. And God has a plan to remove the stain of your fleshly nature.
