Mistake: teaching behavior and tradition rather than how to listen to God’s voice

Mistake: teaching behavior and tradition rather than how to listen to God's voice

Mistake: teaching behavior and tradition rather than how to listen to God’s voice

Romans 14:23: “for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.” And faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17), so true faith is the correct response to God’s leading. That means sin is anything done apart from God’s direction. And righteousness is allowing God to lead and do His works through you.

Many churches and schools focus on external behavior and traditions rather than teaching God’s people to truly hear and follow God’s leading. But God is patient, and He is always working to bring His people into deeper truth.

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

If we allow our sinful flesh to deceive us, we leave the Path (Jesus) of life. We choose the path of death. And yet, if we confess our sins, the Father is faithful and just to forgive us. He not only pardons us, but He also removes ALL unrighteousness from us. He picks us up and puts us back on the Path. He re-connects us to Christ, the only Source of love, wisdom, knowledge, goodness, and life. On that Path, we can continue our journey toward the ultimate completeness in Christ where Christ will be fully formed in us and the rebellious fleshly nature will be a thing of the past.

James 1:14-15 “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”

God doesn’t tempt you. You are currently in a battle for your mind. Your spirit has already been joined to Christ’s Spirit if you’re born again. God wants to build Christ in your mind and dispense with the useless carnal mind. Satan has other desires. God will win.

John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

That freedom will be complete.

Romans 5:12 “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.”

Ephesians 2:3 “All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.”

Those verses describe our natural status. But Jesus died and rose to set us free from all of that. Though we are now incomplete, God will complete the work in us if we continue to listen to Him and yield to His grace.

Ask God to answer these questions.
Sin is leaving the Path of life. What happens if you leave the Path of life? (The Path is Jesus.)
How does God forgive you and remove unrighteousness from you?
Why do you need to keep walking on the Path?
What does it mean that Christ can be fully formed in you?
What does it mean to you to be set free by Jesus?
Bonus questions:

“The wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23” What does that mean?
What does it mean to confess your sins?
What does it mean that God not only pardons you but also removes all unrighteousness from you?
How does God build Christ in your minds, and how can you cooperate with this process?
What is the ultimate goal of Christ being fully formed in you and your rebellious fleshly nature being a thing of the past?

OUT OF LOVE WE HAVE GATHERED; IN LOVE WE JOIN TOGETHER

OUT OF LOVE WE HAVE GATHERED; IN LOVE WE JOIN TOGETHER

OUT OF LOVE WE HAVE GATHERED; IN LOVE WE JOIN TOGETHER

Out of love we have gathered,
In love we join together,
To tell Jesus Christ is King.

In love we have come,
In love we shall go,
To confess He is Lord,
And His glory to show.

Out of love we have gathered,
In love we join together,
To tell Jesus Christ is King.

Every knee shall bow,
And the praises will ring,
Every tongue confess,
That Christ is the King

Out of love we have gathered,
In love we join together,
To tell Jesus Christ is King.

In love we do gather
From North, South, East and West,
So join with me, my friend,
And His name we will bless.

Out of love we have gathered,
In love we join together,
To tell Jesus Christ is King.

It’s your choice: direct your attention to Christ and life or to your flesh and death.

It’s your choice: direct your attention to Christ and life or to your flesh and death.

It’s your choice: direct your attention to Christ and life or to your flesh and death.

Galatians 5:1 “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

It’s your choice. You can direct your attention to Christ and life or to your flesh and death.
Romans 8:2 “For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”

These are two conflicting laws. Consider the law of gravity. It holds you down to the earth unless another law overcomes it. When a rocket takes off, another law is stronger than the law of gravity. If the rocket continues, it can leave the influence of the earth’s gravitation completely and the sky’s the limit.

2 Peter 2:19 “They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.”

The world does promise a sort of freedom. It’s freedom from the goodness of God. They talk about love, but it’s a false, self-serving love. It’s not the love that God is. Their freedom is slavery to corruption.

1 John 1:8-9 “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Each of us has a sinful nature. We don’t deny that. We don’t identify with that sinful nature, but it deceives us every time we listen to it. When that happens, God is both faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness if we confess our fault to Him. Pride will stand in the way, but pride is just one more example of sin. Sin is slipping or stepping off the Path. The Path is Jesus Christ. The Path is that connection to Him through His leading and His power of grace to do righteousness through us. Jesus Christ is the Path to a kind of life that never ends. It’s a life where there is no sickness, sadness, or pain.
Ask God to answer these questions:

  • What is the law of sin and death?
  • How does the law of gravity relate to the law of the Spirit of life?
  • What does it mean to be enslaved by corruption?
  • Why do you need to confess your sins to God?
  • What is your Path to a life that never ends?

Bonus questions:

  • What are the law of the Spirit of life and the law of sin and death mentioned in Romans 8:2?
  • What does this mean: For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved?
  • Why does the world’s version of freedom lead to slavery to corruption?
  • Explain Jesus is the Path and sin is leaving the Path.
  • Explain the promise of a life without sickness, sadness, or pain.
  • God designed you to be connected to Him. Without that constant connection, nothing works right. Learn to stand in God’s presence and hear His voice. Then teach others to do the same.

WHEN YOU WERE A SLAVE OF SIN

WHEN YOU WERE A SLAVE OF SIN

WHEN YOU WERE A SLAVE OF SIN

Romans 6:20-22 “For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.”

To be free from God is to be a slave of demonic torment, sin, sickness, and death. To receive Christ as Lord and Master is to be a slave of Christ’s Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, humility, inner strength, and faith. Divine wisdom and knowledge are part of the package.

John 8:34 “Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.’“

And it is indeed slavery.

Romans 7:14-15 “For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.”

That was the Apostle Paul speaking. He does go on to explain that the fleshly nature is sold under sin, but he no longer identifies with his sinful nature. This is a very important point. We ought not to identify with our fleshly natures. We ought not to see each other after the flesh. We now identify with the Christ within. Christ in you never sins. Your fleshly nature can’t do anything but sin. Christ in you is holy and growing. Your fleshly nature can’t be reformed, but it is diminished each time you yield yourself to the leading and power of God for righteousness.

If something is done without faith, it is sin (Romans 14:23). But faith comes from hearing God’s leading (Romans 10:17), which means true faith listens to God, trusts God, and follows God. Sin, then, is anything done without God’s direction, while righteousness is letting God lead and work through you.

Many churches and schools emphasize rules and traditions instead of teaching people how to listen to God and follow Him. But God is patient, always working to bring His people into a deeper understanding of His truth.

Ask God to answer these questions.
What are the fruits of being a slave to sin?
What are the fruits of being a slave to God?

How does the fruit of sin that leads to shame and death contrast with the fruit of sanctification and eternal life (Romans 6:21-22)?
How can you be set free from sin and become a slave of God?
Why is everyone who practices sin a slave to sin?
Why should you stop identifying with the sinful, fleshly nature but rather identifying with Christ within?

YOU ARE SLAVES OF THE ONE WHOM YOU OBEY Romans 6:16-18

YOU ARE SLAVES OF THE ONE WHOM YOU OBEY Romans 6:16-18YOU ARE SLAVES OF THE ONE WHOM YOU OBEY

Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

No one is excluded.

Psalm 51:5  “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.”

When Adam and Eve obeyed the devil, they became a conquered nation in slavery to the evil one. As a conquered nation, their children were also part of that conquered nation. When anyone is born, that person is born with a sinful nature. Only Christ can transform that sinful nature.

Romans 6:16-18 says, “Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.”

That’s how it all started, but we can be transformed by yielding to God’s grace as God’s grace says God’s words and does God’s acts through us. The flesh dies a bit each time. Christ is more fully formed each time. It starts with God leading. We hear. Jesus Christ, God’s Word, authors faith in our hearts and then finishes it. Here’s how Christ finishes God’s faith in us. Faith gives us access to God’s grace. God’s grace does God’s work through us as we yield. We must yield and allow it. We can’t be headstrong to do our own will or figure out things for ourselves separate from God.

Remember the Parable of the Sower. The Bible says the seed is the Word. In another place, it says Jesus Christ is the Word. So the Seed is Jesus Christ.

Ask God to answer these questions.
What does the Bible mean that all have sinned?
Why were you born with a sinful nature?
What does it mean to yield to God?
Adam and Eve enslaved humanity to sin. They became a conquered nation. How does this “conquered nation” analogy explain the sinful nature in every person who is born?
What is the deep meaning of the Parable of the Sower?

Bonus questions:

When you yield to God’s grace, how does that lead to your transformation and the death of your flesh?
What is the role of faith in accessing God’s grace and enabling God’s work in you?
What does the Parable of the Sower teach about the role of God’s Word (or Jesus Christ, the Seed) in your life?

God wants a relationship with you

God wants a relationship with you

God wants a relationship with you

Some people teach this false doctrine: they say, “Go ahead and sin. It won’t hurt you. Jesus will forgive you.” Peter wrote about that, and in 2 Peter 2:19 he said, “They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.” Liberalism seeks to be liberated from the righteousness that is a free gift in Jesus Christ.

Some people claim to be sinless, and we will all be sinless one day. Christ who lives in us is sinless, but we each have a carnal nature that can’t do right. You can’t reform your carnal nature or fix it. You can refuse to do what it tells you to do. You can read 1 John 1:8-9 that says, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The word “sin” means stepping or slipping off the Path. Jesus is the Path. If we tell God we’re sorry for stepping off the Path and not following Jesus, God will say, “I forgive you and wash you clean.” Then He will put you back on the Path of righteousness (what you do) leading to holiness (what you are becoming) where you jumped off the Path. He’ll put you back into the presence of Jesus so His Spirit can lead you.

God doesn’t tempt you. The devil, the world systems, and your sinful, carnal nature tempt you. For example, James 1:14-15 says “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” And yet, you are set free if you receive Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and slavery. Look at what John 8:36 says, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

While many churches and schools emphasize rules and traditions instead of teaching people how to listen to God and follow Him, God wants a relationship. In that relationship, He leads and is the power in you for righteousness. He explains this in Romans 14:23 where is says anything not done in faith is sin. Then, in Romans 10:17, He explains that faith comes by listening to Him. Jesus said, we live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Life and everything good starts when God speaks and we listen and yield ourselves to His love.

Ask God to answer these questions:

What does it mean to be a slave of corruption?
In what sense can you live sin-free right now?
What is your carnal nature?
What does it mean to step off the Path?
How does God forgive you when you sin?

Bonus questions:

Who tempts you to sin? (Name all of them.)
Why can’t your carnal nature be reformed or fixed?
False teachers promise freedom (2 Peter 2:19) but are slaves of corruption. Their false teachings enslave people to corruption. What do you know about modern examples of this?
What does it mean for you to be free indeed, especially when facing temptations?
Why does God allow temptation?

THE LOVE OF GOD

THE LOVE OF GOD

THE LOVE OF GOD

OH, LET THE LOVE OF GOD

Oh, let the love of God
be shed abroad
in your hearts by the Holy Ghost.
Love one another,
for love is the key,
To enter the Kingdom of God.
Behold! How good and how pleasant it is
for brethren to dwell in unity,
For there the Lord commands His blessing,
Even life forevermore.

The consequences of sin are terrible

The consequences of sin are terrible

The consequences of sin are terrible

Romans 6:20-22 tells us about sin’s slavery. “For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.” Jesus said, “everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.” (John 8:34)

Paul explained something that most Christians still don’t understand. You are not your sin once you are born again. You still have sin dwelling in you, but Christ also lives in you. It’s like you are two different people at the same time, but only one is the real you. You are the Christ living you. Christ in you can’t sin. That’s why you need to concentrate on Jesus and listen to Him. You can’t allow your fallen carnal nature to control you. Read Romans 7 if you would like to know more about this.

The good news is that you can be set free from sin’s slavery. For example, Galatians 5:1 says “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” So, you don’t need to sin. You can do what’s right by the power of God’s grace. You get God’s grace through faith. And you get faith by listening to God’s leading, teaching, and correcting voice.

The consequences of sin are terrible as Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Sin leads to death, but there’s a spiritual law that can overcome the law of sin and death. As Romans 8:2 says, “For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”

Ask God to answer these questions:

How can you still sin if Christ lives in you?
What does it mean for you to concentrate on Jesus?
How do you get God’s grace?
What is the law of the Spirit of life?
How is being a slave to sin different from being a slave to God?

Bonus questions:

What is the fruit of sin, and why does it lead to shame and death?
What does it mean for you to have sin dwelling in you while you Christ also lives in you?
Why is it important to focus on Jesus and not the carnal nature?
How does faith allow you to receive God’s grace?
How does grace do what’s right through you as you yield to God’s Spirit?
How does the “law of the Spirit of life” overcome the “law of sin and death” in you?
How does the devil use the culture, media, and education to try to drag you into sin?

EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDETH OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD

EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDETH OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD

EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDETH OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD

Some people think they’re perfect or at least pretty good. Some people think sin is OK and won’t hurt anyone. Some people think their particular sin is OK because they were born that way. Some people think they are stuck with sin. None of those are true. And yet, God knows all about every sin you have committed, and He has a plan to set you free so you will never sin. That will be how it is once the Holy Spirit transforms you into the image and likeness of Christ. That’s true. That might seem like something too big to believe, but let me explain.

Everyone is born with a problem. We’re all born as slaves to sin. That means we’re born as slaves to the devil. For example, Romans 3:23 says “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” And Psalm 51:5 says, “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.” Every person was born sinful. Every person was born a slave to sin. Some people say, “I can’t help it. I was born this way.” On their own, they can’t help it. But Jesus will set them free if they allow Him to do it.

Not only was everyone born a slave to sin, everyone also has sinned. And, when they sin, they become slaves of the one they obey. The devil tells them to sin, and they do it. Oh yes. Every thought you have comes from one of three sources: the devil, your mind that is a slave to the devil, or God. And you know the difference between the voices. For example, Romans 6:16-18 says, “Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.”

While many churches and schools emphasize rules and traditions instead of teaching people how to listen to God and follow Him, God desires a relationship with us. Romans 14:23 says that anything not done in faith is sin, and Romans 10:17 explains that faith comes by listening to Him. Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” True life and everything good begin when God speaks, and we listen, trust, and yield ourselves to His love. This is righteousness—allowing God to lead and work through us, rather than relying on our own efforts.

Ask God to answer these questions.
What does it mean to be a slave to sin?
Since you were born sinful, how can you be set free from sin?
Why do people sin if they know it’s wrong? How about you?
What does it mean for you to be set free by Jesus?
Why does sin lead to death?

Bonus questions:

What does it mean for you to be a slave of righteousness?
Why do some people believe they are perfect or that some sin is acceptable?
Why is that fact that you were born sinful not excuse sinful behavior?
How does the Holy Spirit transform you into the image and likeness of Christ?
What does it mean for you to fall short of the glory of God?
How can you be set totally free from your natural slavery to the devil?
