Suppose a dad tells his son to mow the lawn. The son starts painting the house a different color instead. Has the son done the will of the dad?

Let me emphasize it again. Good works are a gift from God to you. Good works are not a gift from you to God. It’s easy to get the effect before the cause.
If I try to establish my own righteousness, I fail to conform to the righteousness of God. If I come up with my own ideas of how to please God without faith, I’ll go off course and fight against the will of God. My intent may be good, but I need Jesus Christ. He’s the Source of all Truth. Without Him, I’m already off course. I may trust people who have evil intent who convince me to do things that will have terrible consequences. And it’s all in the name of “serving the Lord” without knowing the Lord. I might start promoting evil. If I dream up my own sense of justice, I can twist justice into injustice. If I follow the political correctness of the world, I can’t follow the leading of Christ.
